Classes with the textbook should be conducted in Polish from the very beginning, by which students are provoked to open up to communication more quickly. This task is facilitated by the lecturer’s commentary, which describes in detail, step by step, how to conduct classes, also indicates variants of work with the material depending on the objectives of the lesson, the size of the group or the advancement of the students.
Tests
While working with the material, two tests are provided after 5 and after 10 lessons. They are included in the Lecturer’s Notebook, while the recordings are on the cd in the textbook. The tests check all language skills, i.e. listening, reading, writing and speaking. They are designed to be a confirmation of the student’s achievement of specific language competencies, to close a certain stage of learning and encourage him to continue his efforts.
Additional games and exercises
The goal of each lesson is for the student to master the material – the lesson is for teaching. In order to develop the student’s habitual mastery of creating the discussed structure and manipulating it, we offer a large selection of additional, simple automation exercises in the Lecturer’s Notebook. What we mean by this is the possibility of practicing particular syntactic structures, which consists in repeating the same pattern over and over again and filling it with a different lexical content each time. The important thing is that during such a dribble we simultaneously practice and control. In addition to materials for simple automation exercises, the section also includes more complex games, used to add variety to the lesson once the material has been mastered, as well as role plays, which put the student to the task of facing a specific communicative task. An important purpose of these additional exercises, which are available only to the teacher, is that they make it possible to introduce an element of surprise during the lesson and detach the student from continuous work with the textbook.
Intensive Phonetic Training
Constant work on the correctness and fluency of speech is crucial for didactic success, one could even risk saying that it is more important than work on grammatical correctness. That’s why, in addition to the phonetic exercises appearing in every unit of the START textbook, in the PHONETICS section, an important component of our program designed for the initial stage of learning is INTENSIVE PHONETIC TRAINING – an innovative element of the A-level language learning material.
INTENSIVE PHONETIC TRAINING is a collection of recordings consolidating the grammatical and communicative constructions learned in the textbook. The proposed recordings are either very simple drills consolidating only one linguistic difficulty (e.g. the verb conjugation or the form of case), or they are a collection of the most important, from the point of view of communication, stylistically diverse sentences from a given lesson unit. Exercises can be used in class or for independent work by the student. Working with them involves listening and repeating the pattern to improve listening comprehension and pronunciation, but also helps memorize complete, ready-to-use constructions.
Transcription
For the convenience of students and lecturers, in the Lecturer’s Notebook we provide transcriptions of recordings that did not appear in full in the student’s textbook.
